Democracy Dinners

Hungry for POWER: Host a
Democracy Dinner to generate ideas on Britain’s democracy (12-18 Sept)

Jonathon Edwards

“For food I would have to give my guests a choice – we are talking democracy here – so a meat dish a fish dish and a veggie dish. No puddings or starters. Followed by Whisky and cigars. I would love to get Ken Livingstone, Gorbachev, Fidel Castro, Donald Rumsfeld and the Clintons together but to add spice I’d invite a group of school children and some folk from the housing estates around Newcastle. Failing that My two boys and my wife.” Jonathon Edwards, Athlete

Sir John Jackson

“I would serve my guests the earth cakes that the poor of Haiti make for their children to keep their bellies full. Earth or chalk cakes were made by the rural poor in this country for the same purpose - even early in the 20th century. I would ask them to discuss your questions in the context of another question, ‘Why are we doing this?’.” Sir John Jackson
Chair, Countryside Alliance

In the week beginning Monday 12 September, the POWER Inquiry will be initiating a series of nationwide Democracy Dinners, giving you the chance to get involved in the next stage of the POWER Commission’s deliberation.

Democracy Dinners will provide the ideal opportunity to look over the problems identified with participation and democracy during the past year by the POWER Commission and to come up with some really innovative and practical ideas for our democracy.

By hosting a Democracy Dinner, you could contribute to the work of the Inquiry by helping us come up with recommendations to include in our report, to be published in February 2006. After your dinner, you will be able to add all ideas generated by your discussion online.

Your Democracy Dinner could be anything from a lavish meal for friends to a bag of chips in the park with your mum. You will be eating a Democracy Dinner along with thousands of other participants around the country and together your thoughts will contribute to a truly nationwide debate on Britain’s democracy.

POWER has taken care of the details; when you register as a Democracy Dinner host, POWER will send you a pack full of materials to help you get your dinner off the ground, including all the materials you need and the ‘talking points’ you will be asked to discuss.
